All Aboard the Train to TackyTown

Jan 27, 2011

This weekend, my former co-worker was traveling from NYC to D.C. when she spotted a faux pas so vile that she felt the need to share it with me.  I opened the message happy to hear from my friend, until the photo below seared my retinas and caused me to shudder.  No lie, I shuddered.

Caption: Two Vera bags, sequin Uggs and she’s wearing shorts, it’s like your worst nightmare.

No, in my nightmares, I’m usually wearing nude hose and white sneakers, but I digress. Even for traveling attire, this is pretty awful.  And while I can’t believe that I’m about to say this, the most horrifying part for me is that her Vera bags neither match nor coordinate (a part of me just died.) raising this faux pas above a single indiscretion into the I-Have-No-Taste-Please-Help-Me category.

If some of you are wondering why this outfit is so bad or thinking that being on a plane/train is justification for these ills, then you should probably slink quietly out the back door and never darken the doorway of this blog again.  Remember kids, friends don’t let friends carry Vera.

Belle, I LOVE your blog, I really do, but I think you're “beating a dead horse” here, if you'll excuse the expression. I don't mean to be negative, and I understand that you fervently dislike Uggs & Vera Bradley, but must you post about it so often? Your recent polyvore sets have been simply gorgeous – I'd much rather see another one of those!

I'm not too far away from you (Richmond, VA). Just yesterday, I saw a VCU student walking with those damned Uggs on. I had never seen them before and craned my neck so bad I almost drove on the sidewalk. She also had on a bright yellow parka and black tights. No idea why anyone would think they're a good idea.

Oh, and old friend of mine called me up a few years ago SO excited that she had gotten her hands on a few Vera bags that had been in a photo shoot. She has been carrying them around since and I just haven't had the heart to tell her. She loves them dearly.

OOHHH my goodness… My only hope is that it is a young girl who doesn't know any better!

There's a saying in politics that when you get tired of saying the same phrase over and over, that's usually when people are just starting to hear you. So I'll keep beating the dead horse until people stop wearing Uggs and carrying Vera.

i work in georgetown, this is a daily view for me. black non-opaque tights as pants, uggs, and nine different shades of VB bags.

i don't share belle's aversion to VB's, but have always associated them with older women…like my mom's garden club. same with quilted coats, they look fine on moms but not sure why college students like them so much.

  6. Lesley says:

OMG i'm so embarrased! I didn't know someone was taking a picture of me at the airport!

    Kidding!

But yea, this is a truly horrible look. I get it, you're at the airport and want to be comfy, but come on. And you know how much they spent on those shoes too! Oyy vey! Plus, I've always hated vera bags. I just don't get their appeal.

  7. TA in DC says:

Belle. Thank you so much for putting this up. I think girls my age (I'm assuming she's in her early to mid-20s) need to seriously reevaluate what they're wearing – starting with Uggs and these tacky designer bags. There are WAY too many of them floating around and I know it seems harsh, but I can't help but stare (sometimes rudely) at people who have them, it's just so distracting.

Thank you for putting up this post and making people aware that fashion can be bad – very bad.

  8. Jaime says:

Oh wow. I had no idea that sequined Uggs existed. I mean, the grandmotherly luggage aside, those boots are straight out of Space Balls.
