What Are Your Favorite Style Blogs?

Nov 15, 2011

This weekend, I decided to cull my Google Reader of all the fashion blogs that I no longer read.  I eliminated a few because I never see anything on their sites that I can afford.  Others got the boot because they no longer post with regularity.  And several more were chucked because continuing to read them seemed rather fruitless. (Seriously, how many times can Emily at Cupcakes and Cashmere rearrange the furniture in her house during a calendar year?)

So I thought, that I might dedicate a post to listing some of my favorite blogs, and allow y’all to suggest some new ones for me to read in the comments.

Jean at Extra Petite is one of my favorite bloggers on the Interwebs.  She posts clothes that women can afford, and she believes in the power of Ebates, what’s not to love?  I appreciate the time she puts into her posts and I think her professional style advice is applicable to women in many different career fields.

Mizhattan is a fantastic blog.  Her weekly outfit sets are creative, fashion forward and always give me a lot of great ideas.  And if you live in NYC, or within driving distance of NYC, her sample sale coverage is unbeatable.  Sometimes, I think she should open a tour guide company for women who want to come to NYC just to hit up the designer sample sales.

Style is about using fashion to display who you are on the inside.  John Jannuzzi, the author of Textbook, uses designer clothing to make literary characters three dimensional.  What would Dominique Francon or Eleanor of Aquitaine wear? Jannuzzi’s posts give you a peak into these characters and his own imagination.

Is yogurt a natural exfoliant? Where can you find a list of cosmetic ingredients?  The answers to these questions and more can be found on The Beauty Brains.  So if you’ve ever had a beauty question that needed a more scientific answer, then this is the site for you.

So what are your favorite style blogs?  I would really appreciate some new reading material, so leave your suggestions in the comments.

“Seriously, how many times can Emily at Cupcakes and Cashmere rearrange the furniture in her house during a calendar year?”

I legitimately am cracking up because this is SO TRUE!!!

  2. Thank you! says:

For this post. I stumble across so many blogs that are either pointless or acting as advertisers for the same old stores. Yours is one of the very few that have original content so it's great to learn what you think is a good blog.

Apart from caphillstyle, I follow corporette, looksgoodfromtheback (it is hilarious) and some times 9to5chic when I just want to mindlessly see pretty pictures

  3. katherine says:

your blog is my favorite! as a young attorney, i think you give great style advice for working women. i also love extra petite!

  4. V says:

girlwithcurves.tumblr.com is awesome, i also love corporette and atlantic-pacific.blogspot.com

  5. what she said says:

the glamourai (by far best semi-daily outfit posts out there), sea of shoes, man repeller, from me to you,, garance dore, what is reality anyway, a beautiful mess. all win high marks for frequency of posts, high-quality photos, original content, excellent writing and inspiring, relevant fashion or DIY posts (with the exception of sea of shoes who is more hit or miss with her writing even though the photos are lovely).

  6. Jes says:

    kendieveryday.blogspot.com
    sundaycrossbow.blogspot.com
    abeautifulmess.typepad.com

I really enjoy these 3 because they're totally my style and I think their clothes are affordable/more attainable than other style blogs.

  7. E says:

I love Atlantic-Pacific for things to look at – Brooklyn Blonde is good too!

  8. Monica says:

I used to love corporette, but most of their fashion picks are way out of my price range. Then the “frugal fridays” just look too cheap (target, so much from target). Corporette is good for general office advice. I love, love, love extra petite!! Style Bakery can be good (they do a nice roundup of upcoming internet sample sales). Lauren Conrad's “The Beauty Department” has some nice tutorials as well (though most of her other posts fall into the 'frivolous' category).

  9. alex says:

I love Elements of Style, The Beauty Department, and Atlantic -Pacific.

  10. sai says:

I still check What I Wore. I don't always love the writer's outfit choices–my style's a little different–but the color combinations are cool and have definitely inspired me to be more adventurous since I started reading. And I love that nearly all of the pieces are within a normal price range (though there's a lot of c/o's).

  11. K says:

CapHill is still my all time fav – most relevant, interesting, in my price range, appropriate for my life!
anyone have any good reccommendations/if a such thing exits, of a blog for “tall” girls? I love the LOOK of extrapetite,, but it's the opposite of relevant to me – my sleeves and pants are always too short!

  12. Alicia says:

Love Extra Petite (since I'm a petite). Also like Alterations Needed and Corporette. I have a bunch of food blogs and design blogs in my feeder, as well as the obligatory news ones for the 9-5 job.

  13. Sam says:

Kendi Everyday and Penny Pincher Fashion are two new blogs in my aresenal

  14. teachinginstyle says:

Friend of extrapetite, Khatu (iamkhatu.blogspot.com), features creative yet accessible outfits and includes both investment and trendy pieces.

  15. CB says:

I love wit & whimsy, cheetah is the new black and pretty.little.world

  16. DallasSkirtEnvy says:

Used to love Corporette, but like others am frustrated that though I fit the demographic, I can't imagine spending what they seem to think is the minimum threshold on clothes.
I'm still searching for the perfect “Corporate style for the big butt” blog.

  17. Melinda says:

Thank you for posting about extrapetite! I've never seen it before, but her style is spot on for mine. While I am not petite, I LOVE her blog. I'll be a regular there for sure!

  18. KC says:

I second K's lament for a fashionable tall blog! I checked out ExtraPetite, but have a hard time relating to having to chop 5″ off of the hem of a dress.

  19. Ellie says:

Corporette, and I like Le Fur Coat just for the beauty therein.

  20. Rose says:

corporette for great advice, a beautiful mess for having my body type, man repeller for inspiration!

  21. Anne says:

Interesting question. It got me thinking about what I want from a style blog and why I'm not bothering with many lately beyond this one.

I love Corporette for the article about what's appropriate in the workplace and the great discussions in the comments but a single suit or dress or bangle – well, I can find that for myself. Not that helpful, style-wise, but one of the few blogs that realizes people don't wear booties and fur vests to work.

I read some of the petite blogs (extra petite and alterations needed) but somehow it's hard for me to translate what looks amazing on their extremely tiny frames to how something similar might look on me (5'2″ but super curvy). I think that for me, the pictures of them in their clothes is much less useful than a Polyvore set.

What I Wore and some of the others just leave me shaking my head and thinking O RLY?

I can't get enough of posts that show how to style a single piece multiple ways – so far, it's this blog and Mizhatten. I'll check some of the others mentioned here.

  22. KH says:

“Seriously, how many times can Emily at Cupcakes and Cashmere rearrange the furniture in her house during a calendar year?”

And not just that, but how many times can she find 'the most versatile piece' which 'quickly becomes one of her favourites'!!?

  23. EBT says:

    Kendi Everyday
    Extra Petite
    My closet in sketches
    What would a nerd wear
And OF COURSE Capitol Hill Style

  24. Laura says:

    Belle,

Yours is really the only one I read, and I love it for so many of the reasons you outlined in your post last week. Jezebel had an interesting story yesterday on some of the issues/ethics surrounding fashion blogs:

    https://jezebel.com/5859805/the-dirty-business-of-fashion-blogs

  25. Emme Gee says:

I love Garance Dore (for fashion ideas), I Want to Be Her! (for fun), What I Wore (for practicality), Atlantic-Pacific (for glamour) and Miss Moss (for inspiration). I used to read Corporette, but I am so over it. The clothes are too expensive and/or unfashionable and the general demographic seems to have gotten way older.

  26. Emme Gee says:

    OOH, also love Tomboy Style!

  27. RachelRemarks says:

Cupcakes and Cashmere – I look occasionally but I don't think her style translates out of California/in the real world

The Pursuit of Style – used to love, but I think she's abandoned blogging

Young Sophisticates – a new favorite

Oh Joy – beautiful blog, except a lot of baby stuff lately

Corporette – to be honest, I would read it more if she re-designed w/ a more attractive template

  28. Whitney says:

    @Emme Gee: LOVE Tomboy Style!

I check this blog daily 🙂 Also like Garance Dore, CUP OF JO (I guess that's more of a Lifestyle Blog), Quite Continental, and J.Crew Afficionada. The Sartorialist is great for inspiration even if I wouldn't wear any of the styles irl.

  29. Ms. C says:

So many blogs are ridiculous. I often wonder what sort of profession calls for top knots, sheer blouses, and bandage skirts at 9am (on second thought, maybe they are all interns). From the absurd masses, here are a sensible few:
    – elements of style
    – A Cup of Jo (hello hair tutorials)
    – 9to5Chic
    – This Time Tomorrow
    – East Side Bride (Don't let the name fool you, despite its decidedly marital focus this blog features a hilarious, cynical woman and her hatred of all things whiny-bride. Always good for a laugh. Plus, she features some really great accessories and who doesn't love a good accessory?)
    – The Daybook (But she just had a baby so her blog has gone the way of so many friends' facebook pages, which is to say uninteresting)
    – Good life for less (I don't read the text but often find myself tagging her easily accessible outfit ideas)

  30. m says:

I read only 3 things (well, plus Sartorialist, which isn't really reading):
    — extrapetite
    — caphillstyle
    — J Crew Aficionada

What I like is the authors' fashion sense, the fact that they're about style rather than going gaga over hoarding high-end designer stuff, and, most importantly, have proper grammar and spelling. Bad grammar drives me nuts!

  31. m says:

… and yet I just posted for y'all a nice run-on sentence. My bad. 🙁

  32. I absolutely adore The Chloe Conspiracy. And 9 to 5 Chic and Extra Petite, as others have already mentioned. I used to read Corporette religiously, but now I'm pretty bored with it. The comments are more useful than Kat's posts, although I feel a little guilty even typing that.

  33. Michelle says:

I am new to the world of fashion, particularly women’s style. I am not a designer nor a stylist. I am a plain, single woman who did not care about how I look and how I present myself to others. I always saw fashion as something superficial and irrelevant to living a satisfied life. But I have recently realized that looking good is essential to feeling good about myself. So I have decided to start learning about women’s fashion and I have visited some of the blogs included in your list. I’d like to suggest a new blog about fashion news and style as well, it’s https://www.natalieumbert.com.

  34. Update for 2016 says:

Can you do an updated 2016 version of this? I used to love Extra Petite but since she became a full-time blogger, I don’t love her outfits as much. Thanks!

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
