Lacy Bralette ($20) // White Poplin Shirt ($70) // Leopard d’Orsay Flats ($88)

Lacy Lingerie. A little bit of black lace never hurt anyone.  These bralettes are very popular.  There are plenty of affordable options like the one above from HumbleChic or this cotton one with lace trim from Neiman Marcus.  Need something with more support?  Try this lace-trim Maidenform bra.

White Button Up. Who doesn’t love a crisp white shirt?  Banana Republic makes a nice one.  Ann Taylor also offers a chic, oversize button-up that looks super cute with jeans.  Plus-size? Try this high-low tunic blouse.

Medium-Wash Denim. Dark denim has been the style for a long time, but some lighter washes have also made their way into vogue.  I like these AG Farrah’s in a wash with hints of grey and khaki.  I also like the ‘Miles’ wash on these Paige skinny jeans.  Need something under-$100?  I really like the wash on these Gap Long and Lean jeans.

Small Rings. If you’re still in love with tiny, delicate rings, Catbird is the first place to look.  I also love these blanca monros gomez rings with tiny gems.  If you need something under-$25, try Planet Blue.

Animal-Print Flats jazz up any casual or business casual outfit.  For me, the pinnacle are these Loeffler Randall cheetah flats in regular or oh-so-trendy lace-up.  If you want loafers, J.Crew Factory has a pair.  And I really like these leopard skimmers for something classic.

For petites I just got a white button-up tunic from Lands End that I love. Comes in Tall and Plus as well.

    Questions:
Are you supposed to be able to see the black through the white shirt, or not? Does the shirt need to be a little on the sheer side so it looks intentional? Do you wear a low-cut camisole so you see the lace at the opening but not the color through the actual shirt?

I feel so silly that I don’t understand how this is supposed to work.

Love a black lace bra under a white button down! It’s so subtly sexy.

Minus the lacy black, this is my go-to airport outfit, straight down to the Ann Taylor oversized shirt (they make a non-tuxedo version without the placket). It’s really perfect for fall. Throw on a gigantic scarf and go apple-picking or gourd shopping.

  5. LH says:

Not sure when it became acceptable for grown women to show their bras under sheer shirts, but I’m not ok with it. Still looks tacky to me, even when it’s Maria Sharapova wearing Valentino over La Perla.

    • AA says:

I agree- could you suggest when it would be acceptable to wear this? Maybe a night out on the town?

I definitely understand wanting to be subtly sexy but don’t know if this would be crossing the line in to

      • Belle says:

I would say a semi-casual date night would be a good time. Like a dinner at a nice-ish restaurant or casual drinks at dark bar.

  6. W says:

I usually agree with you one everything on your blog. You should never ever wear a black bra under a white shirt, it doesn’t look sexy, it looks trashy. If you want to show the lace, wear a white bra like that. Never ever wear black bra under a white shirt of any type.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
