What I’m Wearing: To the Pool

Aug 10, 2017

I reject the notion that a bikini body should be anything other than your regular body, with a bikini on it.  That being said, my new job has upped my weekly McDonald’s consumption by like 350%.  So none of my bikinis currently fit.

Hey, weight gain happens.

This weekend, we’re headed to the pool with some friends, so I decided to use this opportunity to buy a one-piece swimsuit.  I’ve tried a lot of them over the past two years–and while some were gorgeous on–I don’t enjoy feeling like I’m actively trying to cover up my body.  It actually makes me feel worse about myself than when I’m showing off the few extra inches that came with law school, in a two-piece.

So I decided to see if there was a happy medium between bikini and having a bit more coverage in the midsection.  And lo and behold, I found a pool outfit that’s cool, sexy and just enough coverage.

This Marysia Monokini ($237) costs more than I would typically spend on a suit.  But I had a gift card I wasn’t using, and this seemed a good way to spend it.  I loved the color, the scalloped edge, and the high neck.  It should give me just the right balance of coverage and skin.

If you want a similarly sexy suit for less, I loved the print on this side-cutout suit and the drape-neck on this one-piece from BarIII.  If you love the scallops, this hot pink one-piece form Warehouse and this coral River Island tankini set.  Boohoo also makes a plus-size bikini with scalloped edges.

I love Mara Hoffman‘s gorgeous prints and designs, but they are SO expensive.  That’s why I was so thrilled to find this gorgeous sarong on Amazon for $70.  I think the soft pastels will work so well with the pink suit.  I’m probably overly excited about this deal, but I don’t care.

Add to this outfit a pair of matte gold Raybans, a straw tote and some gold flip flops, and I am business to be the most put-together lady on the pooldeck.

The pink suit isn’t for me, but I’m dying over the print on that sarong!
Would you be willing to do a post sometime about how to find the right fit in a swimsuit? For example, pants shouldn’t “whisker,” pencil skirts shouldn’t “smile,” but what about swimsuits? I’ve tried on a lot of suits and thought yes, this physically fits on my body, but does it fit properly, the way it should?
    Love the redesign!

i’D BE CAREFUL WITH THIS SUIT. i SAW A SIMILAR ONE ON A WOMAN WHO HAD A QUITE NICE BODY, BUT SOMETHING IN THE WAY THAT THE MIDDLE PIECE WENT OVER HER STOMACH SEEMED TO ACCENTUATE THAT IT WASN’T SMOOTH EVEN MORE. i THINK IN A BIKINI WE JUST REALIZE THAT PARTS OF US STICK OUT MORE THAN OTHERS, IN A ONE PIECE, THAT’S HIDDEN A LITTLE BIT MORE. bUT IN SOMETHING LIKE THIS, IT DOESN’T FIT WITH WHAT WE NORMALLY SEE IN SUITS AND SO YOU NOTICE THE FLAWS MORE SOMEHOW. MY OTHER THOUGHT ON THIS SUIT IS WHAT TAN LINES TO DEAL WITH!

I hope the next trend in swimwear is to do with tankinis what they’ve done with one pieces and make them more fashion forward. I see so many cute one pieces but I detest the idea of having to get totally naked every time I have to pee. They just aren’t very practical. I do however appreciate the coverage of a tankini for those days I’ve had a few too many poolside burgers.

I don’t particularly love using the restroom in one-pieces either, but I’ve never stripped down just to use the facilities! Why not just pull the bottom (i.e., the crotch) to the side?

  4. Nicole says:

Would LOVE to find a one-piece that fits, but apparently I have a long torso? I really never thought so, but every one piece I have tried on has just been too short, to the point of very uncomfortable in my lady zone. When I search for “long torso swimwear” the only solutions are bikinis and tankinis – umm yea, dividing it in two pieces generally makes the length of your torso irrelevant, so no help there.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
