Four Amazing Coats Under-$250 (Plus Styling Tips!)

Nov 2, 2017

The cold weather approaches.  It’s already snowing in Montana, and it’ll be snowing in Washington by Friday.  Lord, I am not ready.  But while I can’t help you with your emotional preparedness, I can certainly help you stay warm.  Here are five incredible coats, all under-$300, and some styling tips to help them look their very best.

Mango Belted Wool Coat ($229) // Free People Waffle Knit Scarf ($48) // W Kleinberg Leather Belt ($148) // Saks Cashmere Lined Gloves ($105)

I love an ivory coat.  Yes, they can be tough to keep clean, but they are so worth it.  This one is absolutely lovely.  I also like this Banana Republic coat.  Plus-size?  Try this long wrap coat from Eloquii.

To jazz this up, first thing is to lose the belt.  A cognac leather belt in either wide (shown) or skinny is a great option.  Another choice would be this grey belt.

You could choose many colors for your gloves, but I think this deep burgundy is the most elegant.  These gloves from Saks make an excellent Christmas gift.

Uniqlo Duffle Coat ($129) // Soia Kyo Feather-Pom Hat ($65) // Isotoner Smart Gloves ($25)

For a casual coat option, I love a duffle coat.  This Burberry coat is, of course, the dream, but this Uniqlo is an affordable option.  It also comes in a mixed grey shade that’s very nice, but I’m partial to the basic navy.

The accessories for this coat should be a little more fun.  I love this pom-pom hat, and these knit gloves will let you use your smartphone while your hands stay warm.  I also like this Marmot Pom hat for $35.

H&M Wool Blend Coat ($80) // Williams Brooch Set ($40) // N Peal Camel Scarf ($220) // & Other Stories Overlapping Gloves ($30)

This ensemble was inspired by this Pinterest photo.  If you told me that a grey coat and a camel scarf went together, I’d be skeptical.  But there’s the proof.  A classic, somewhat unexpected combination.

I adore this H&M collarless coat.  It’s so ladylike.  If you prefer something a bit more glam, this DvF collarless coat in black has a city-chic feel.

I added a fringe camel scarf and simple grey gloves.  If you want to completely recreate the look from the photo, add this $49 Chelsea satchel.

Marks and Spencer Blush Coat ($96) // Pistil Charcoal Scarf ($68) // Blush Cable Gloves ($49)

I thought I would include one colorful coat for those who might be stocked up on neutrals.  I had originally intended to go with a bright pink but this blush gives you color in a subtle form.

I prefer when the gloves match the coat.  I think it’s a cleaner look.  I spotted these blush cable gloves on Rue La La and thought they fit the bill.  But these faux leather Dorothy Perkins gloves are also pretty.

A little contrast seemed necessary, so I added this dark charcoal scarf.  If you prefer something softer, try this ivory fringe scarf.

What do others do about large rings and gloves? I don’t mean giant bling—just any ring other than a band. I’ve found leather gloves too snug to fit over and knit gloves always snag on prongs. Do you skip rings or skip gloves? Can the two coexist?

    • Belle says:

I put my rings on my necklace if I’m wearing one, then put on my gloves. If it’s just a band, you could buy the gloves a little bit.

I turn my engagement ring toward my palm, keeping the stone pushed to one side (not straight down).

  2. Nicolette says:

I had to throw out my beloved coat of 4 years this spring, so I’ve been on the lookout for a new one. These are great, love the grey one and the cream one!

Love, love, love the blush coat. Any thoughts on how long blush will be on-trend?

  4. Bonnie says:

Love these! I was due for a new winter coat so bought one from Boden. It fits perfectly and looks great.

It’s set to be 80 today in Washington. Bleh. We had to put our coats away and get out the summer clothes again. #neverwinterneverchristmas

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
