A His & Hers Packing Guide for Christmas Holidays

Dec 7, 2017

Christmas weekend is right around the corner.  Whether you’re flying or driving, it’s time to think about what to pack.  Are your loved ones casual people?  Will there be parties to attend?  To get your suitcase ready, Kyle and I prepared a his and hers packing guide to take the work out of your travel wardrobe.

The Luggage. My suitcase of choice is Away’s medium-size suitcase, while Kyle prefers the Hook + Albert duffel/garment bag he featured in his gift guide.  I’m the weirdo who refuses to carry on a suitcase (I get two free bags thanks to an airline card).  I enjoy being able to pack an extra pair of shoes and live free from the tyranny of the TSA’s 3oz liquids rule.

The Travel Outfits.

Kyle I travel in a Lacoste t-shirt, AG jeans, and 3rd pair of shoes, usually M.Gemi drivers. So my list assumes these items.

Abra — It’s winter. I’m cold.  So I’m layering.  I wear ripped-knee Blair jeans, a striped J.Crew turtleneck, a slouchy, black turtleneck sweater, my Rothy’s pointed toe flats, and a camel coat.

The Plane Bags.

Kyle — My Tumi leather backpack.

Abra — My Lo & Sons OMG laptop bag, and whatever purse I’m planning on taking.  Since it’s winter it will likely be wine-colored.

Kyle’s 4-Day Packing List.

+ 2 pairs of pants. A dark jean and a colored pair  non-jeans, like these Maroon AG’s.

¾ zip sweaterTravis Mathew is a brand I’ve worn for golf, but the rest of the line is really coming along.

3 button ups. I like summer plaids. I love non-iron shirts.

One of these shirts can be worn under the ¾ zip sweater to make two outfits.

2 pairs of shoes. Tennis shoes and pair of dress boots.

1 Coat. Weight dependent on where home is. I tend to bring a thick sport coat and pair it with a Burberry scarf.

If you’re going to a place that doesn’t require a jacket, good for you.

3 t-shirts. One black, one white, and one blue.

+ 4 pairs of socks. Happy Socks are the best.  Grab a variety pack.

You won’t hear me often say to “act your age,” but socks are the exception. You don’t want to be the semi-adult still looking like a child in white socks with the bottoms worn out.

Workout gear. Nike Dry-Fit is my favorite. Shortsshirtlong sleeve.

No one is suggesting you need need to work out while home for the holidays. However, it can make for a great a excuse to leave the house. You will get a side eye from grandma if you go out for a drink in the middle of the afternoon, but if you go for a run (to the corner bar), all of a sudden you’re the grandchild that “ takes care of himself.”

Abra’s 4-Day Packing List.

+ 3 sweaters. This ivory J.Crew, this orange Marks and Spencer, and this gray, slouchy H&M sweater.

I only wear turtlenecks.  If I’m going to be wrapped in wool, I want it to be cozy.

+ 4 white t-shirts. I only wear these Everlane v-necks.

+ 3 pairs of pants. One pair of AG skinny jeans. One pair of Spanx faux-leather leggings. One pair of olive-colored AG pants.

+ 1 dress. I need a dress for dinner.  Maybe I’ll need it, maybe I won’t, like hell I won’t have it. This Theory ribbed sweater dress is the winner.

+ 4 pairs of shoes. One pair of sneakers. One pair of mushroom-colored ankle boots. One pair of sock boots for the dress.  Also, my Ugg slippers.

My parents’ house is freezing. The Uggs never, ever (not even on an emergency trip to the hospital like in 2011) leave the house.

+ 1 pair of tights and 4 pairs of socks. Spanx tights, and simple ankle socks.

+ 2 pair of earrings and 2 rings. Diamond studs, and pearl studs.  My Yurman cable ring and band.

I don’t wear necklaces with turtlenecks.  This also limits the chances I lose something.

+ Workout clothes. I bring two pair of leggings, and I borrow tops from my Mom.

+ 2 pairs of pajamas. I like these Eberjey slouchy pajamas and these flannels for Xmas morning, because why not.

+ 1 short robe. I like this one from Nordstrom Rack.

Inevitably, I end up running around like a chicken with my head cut off in the morning trying to get ready.  I prefer not to do it naked.

So what are your packing must haves for the holidays?  We lucked out this year and everyone opted not to do gifts, so I don’t have anything extra to pack, which is pretty great.

You two are killin’ it with the tag team blog posts. I really enjoy these (content and form)!

Also, I’m definitely trying that whole workout-clothes-as-beard-for-day-drinking thing next time I’m home…so much side eye, grandma!

  2. Andrea says:

I’ve heard great thing about the Away luggage but wanted to pass along this article, since it impacts “smart luggage.” It looks like Away will be compliant if you remove the battery before flying. https://www.cnbc.com/2017/12/01/american-airlines-bans-some-high-tech-suitcases.html

  3. LHW says:

Just ordered the Marks and Spencer sweater. Looks amazing.

  4. Lizzie says:

My husband feels the need to have all.the.shoes. when we travel. Men’s shoes take up so much space. Kyle, can you do a ‘how to pack like a man’ post? He just shoves everything in unless I pack for him. The actual logistics of fitting things into your bag?

  5. January says:

What are the white t-shirts for? Wearing under the sweaters?

  6. KVB says:

Love these joint posts with K!

  7. RR says:

I’ve been considering purchasing Away luggage pieces. Probably the Medium and the carry-on. I’m indecisive if I should do the smaller or bigger carry on. My husband has a tumi carry on, which I love, but I’m having a hard time justifying that price.

  8. L in SEA says:

Love the Blondo boots. I have a different model (Liam) in the same colour/fabric. I already got the tip of the toe dirty. Any tips for cleaning them?

  9. Anne says:

I am enjoying the collaborative posts you are doing together.

  10. Orla says:

What is an airline card, and how can I get one?

    • Belle says:

What airline do you fly the most? I fly Delta, so I have their Amex card. Two free bags on every flight and one free companion airline ticket per year.

  11. Abby says:

Ugh, I had a Lo & Sons bag that I wanted to love and use all the time, but it fell severely short of my expectations. Recently they contacted me, asking for an online review of the bag I bought. They haven’t published it, though, as they seem to only post 5-star reviews on their site…

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
