My Very Best Beauty Picks of 2017

Dec 13, 2017

I will spare you all of the “Where did 2017 go?!” rhetoric and just say that, when you turn 35, you start caring about how to look younger, longer.  From laser treatments to needle rollers to miracle foundations, I tried a LOT of beauty products in 2017.  Not all of them were winners, but some, some were miracles.

Here are my very best beauty picks for 2017.  These are the best of the best.  The products that make me feel like I spent my money well.  And what is better than that?

Night Is Young Renewal Serum ($93)

Game changer. I had a fleet of serums and creams for nighttime.  Some I liked, some I loved, some I was meh about.  They’re all gone now.  Yes, all of them, even my beloved Ole Henriksen.  I only use this.  My skin is brighter, smoother and clearer.  Love you, Aphorism.

Glossier makes a lot of great products.  There are three I cannot live without: Wowder (a powder that doesn’t cake), Boy Brow (for the perfect brow shape), and Stretch Concealer (lasts for hours, not heavy).

Dr. Jart Clear Skin Lover ($12)

This mask is a two-step process, a moisturizing layer and a rubber mask.  It feels a little weird you first time you wear it, but it is very soothing.  It plumps, reduces breakouts, and hydrates.  I use one a month during my cycle to reduce hormonal breakouts.

Urban Decay De-Slick Spray ($15)

This spray will keep your makeup in place for hours.  It doesn’t matter if it’s humid, if you’re dancing, or if you’re running a marathon.  Okay, maybe not that last one.  I wear it for every big event or any long day when I think I might be in my full-face for 12-hours+.  Your makeup will not move.

Beauty BioScience GloPro Tool ($169)

I think this is the fourth post about this micro-needling tool, and it is that amazing.  I use it three nights a week (I came down from 5) with the serum above.  After several weeks, I think it’s really improving the scar damage on my cheeks and chin.  I can’t wait to see what the results are in the spring.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation ($44)

I’ve only been using this foundation for three weeks, but I truly enjoy it.  It smooths like a dream and blends out flawlessly.  I posted an Instagram video of myself last week and over a dozen watchers asked what foundation I was wearing.  This is it, and it’s fabulous.

TonyMoly Banana Sleeping Pack ($14)

Tired?  Dehydrated?  Need to look rested in a pinch?  This is the product for you.  I used to use it the night before my law school finals (even on 2 hours sleep) and look like I actually slept.

IGK Prenup Instant Spray Hair Mask ($32)

This is a deep conditioner that is light, quick, and effective.  I use it once (sometimes twice) on my tired locks to give them a boost.  Use it from your ears to your ends and comb it through.

    Belle,

I keep waiting to hear your thoughts on ZIIP Beauty. It’s a $500 gadget and the serums are not cheap either, but I’m considering it because skincare is my favorite and I’ll be 30 in a few months.

Have you heard anything – good or bad?

Your blog is the first place I go before a big skincare/beauty purchase – so I’m frozen with indecision!

  2. Sara says:

Abra – Do you know how the Urban Decay De-Slicker compares with their All-Nighter setting spray? I’ve been using their latter religiously. thanks!

  3. morgan says:

I don’t know about a marathon, but I forgot to take my makeup off before running stairs in a football stadium (in North Carolina…in the summer…). I was wearing Urban Decay All-Nighter setting spray, and it was still almost perfect by the time I was done.

  4. care says:

tried to search for the aforementioned youtube video and the only thing i found was a song some band wrote about you after your jeopardy appearance IT IS PURE GOLD

  5. care says:

aaand i just realized you said instragram video. now sad that you don’t have a glam youtube channel hidden someone.

Enjoyed this list. I’m 33 and spent the morning researching botox so I totally feel you on the wanting to look younger, longer!

The banana mask didn’t do anything for me, but enjoyed the smell. I’m almost out of my foundation (been using Lancome miracle tint for years) – so I’ll look into the CT one.
Totally interested in the GloPro but I wish it wasn’t $200, in case I don’t like it.

Have you tried at-home chemical peels?

  7. Jo says:

Great post. Always looking for solid, unbiased beauty product reviews.

  8. mallory says:

Do you still use Retin a with the serum? I seem to recall you used to use it in your routine.

  9. LT says:

Have you tried Clear Sailing from Aphorism? As a nearly 40-yo with both hormonal chin acne (and nowhere else!) and emerging wrinkles/spots, I feel like I could do well by both.

Also, is Night is Young your final step, or do you put a moisturizer on top?

  10. […] At the end of the year I always do my best beauty discoveries which means I also love reading other’s like in this post! […]

  11. Jill says:

Intrigued by the serum but as an acne sufferer, worried about any oil as an ingredient. Do you find it non-acne causing? Love these recommendations, thank you.

  12. jenna says:

Does GloPro do anything other than vibrate that makes it worth the price? I’m wondering if I would see any results with a good microneedle tool which I’ve been too afraid to try. I just can’t justify the price of GloPro right now but you’re making me want to try it so bad!

    • Belle says:

The red light stimulates collagen production. I would start with one of the $20-$30 rollers, see if you like it and can stick to the routine, then upgrade.

      • Steph says:

Belle–Just thought I’d point out that microneedling devices have never actually been tested/reviewed by the FDA to make the claims on reducing/treating wrinkles, acne scars, stimulating collagen production, etc (which are all medical claims). Just thought I’d point it out because people should always be careful purchasing products that make a medical claim that haven’t been fully evaluated!

        • Belle says:

I don’t consider any skincare products medical devices for the reasons you mention. I go only off the results I see, and I’ve seen good results.

  13. Thank you Belle for the list! Have a happy new year 🙂

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
