Under-$100 Party Attire for a Chic New Year’s Eve

Dec 19, 2017

Apologies for the radio silence.  I’ve picked up a nasty cold, and am trying to get well before the holidays.  But I wanted to talk about some affordable New Year’s Eve attire to help you ring in 2018 in style.

Black Dresses

If you want a black dress for NYE, choose one you can wear again.  The style of this AQUA sleeveless dress ($79) is such that you could wear it in any season.  Plus size?  This City Chic dress ($99) has a similar shape.

Another style to check out is this form-fitting Taylor twist-neck halter.  It’s a classic style at an under-$50 price.  For something more dramatic, try this ASOS velvet one sleeve dress or this Tibi-knock-off dress with shoulder bows.

If you have a bit more money to spend (between $100-150), I love this lace yoke dress with a flounce sleeve.  And this sequin-trim Michael Kors dress gives you a little bit of NYE sparkle.

Going-Out Tops

This LOFT off-shoulder halter top ($54) is really cute.  I would add some long black earrings to give it a little lift.  It would look great with black denim or ponte pants.  Maternity?

This rose gold sequin top from Nordstrom rack gives you a lot of sparkle.  If I were shopping for myself, I would by this Zendaya floral-sequin top and wear it with wide leg pants.  This off-the-shoulder lace top from Rack and this navy lace top would look amazing with a black skirt.  Plus-size?  This lace yoke Rack top and this Michael Kors cold-shoulder top.

If you have a little more to spend, this one-shoulder Bardot sequin top is very dramatic.  For something you could wear to work later, try this Reiss draped-overlay top.

Colorful, Fun Dresses

This Aidan Mattox sequin, floral cocktail dress ($86) is a lot of fun.  It has a sophisticated bohemian feel that is so popular right now from designers like Needle & Thread.  Plus size? This Modcloth floral-embroidered dress has a similar look.

This lace, red cocktail dress is one that you could easily wear again.  I also like this cobalt dress with a ruffled sleeve.  If you’re looking for bright colors, this plus-size Eloquii dress in hot pink is fun.  This pine green off the shoulder dress is also a great option.

Want something gold?  This Eva Mendes gold dress is a classic NYE look for $50.  I also like this Calvin Klein metallic faux wrap.

Cool Pants and Jumpsuits

New Year’s Eve is one occasion when I can endorse the wearing of a jumpsuit.  I like this Karen Kane black sequin one ($100).  This one-shoulder jumpsuit from Marina also has a very dramatic look.

We don’t often think of pants as party attire, but a cool pair of pants is a great way to dress for a holiday party.  These Cupcakes & Cashmere sequin pants and these gold sequin leggings would be fun with a long ivory sweater or a tunic length button up.

I also love these Preston & York velvet tuxedo pants.  For a simple black tuxedo pant, try this Talbot’s pair.

“We don’t often think of pants as party attire.” I think you mean You don’t think of pants as party attire. I certainly do as does most of New York. There’s nothing more chic than a perfectly tailored pant with the right heels and a dressy top. Chignon and statement earrings, or sans jewelry with the right clutch, and everything in between. Sometimes a dress can look too precious.

Most DC parties feature dresses, you’d be hardpressed to find someone in pants unless it’s a casual party and they’re wearing jeans.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
