Disrupters are everywhere, and they pop up when a product many people use doesn’t live up to consumer’s highest ideals.  For men, they’re trying to disrupt the shaving industry.  And for women, the disrupters are attacking the bra makers.  Because almost all women wear them, and very few of us love our bra.

Last spring, I reviewed Third Love bras and fell hard for their classic t-shirt bra.  Their 1/2 cup sizes and no slip straps hooked me.  So when my Facebook feed started to show ads for True & Co. bras, I decided, “What the hell?  Maybe I’ll get lucky twice.”

The bra that hooked me was the True Body Lift V-Neck Bra.  It’s billed as a comfortable, supportive alternative to underwire bras for days when you don’t need it or women who just don’t want the wire.  The bra is unlined with no wire or pads, and claims to lift you up to 1″ without flattening you out.

To say that I was excited to try this bra is an understatement.  On the weekends, I often go braless (the benefits of being a small cup size), but it’s not my favorite.  I was looking for exactly what True was selling, a comfortable bra with support that didn’t bind or pinch.  What I got was a pretty good bra, but not a perfect one.

For comfort, this bra is a 10 out of 10.  It doesn’t bind or pinch.  The fabric is soft and smooth.  And the straps are so comfy, you forget they’re there.

Outside of comfort, there are a couple of issues.  First, you need to find the right fit or the bra is a shambles. The size guide says I should be a small, but that size is a little tight. Also, the bottom of the bra rolls up if you undersize.  So, I bought a medium, and it was much improved.

The other issue is flattening.  The bra doesn’t give you uniboob, but without the wire, you don’t get the definition you’re looking for.  So, yes, my breasts look a little flatter in the True bra than they would in a padding-free underwire.  But I’m willing to tolerate a minimal amount of flattening for the comfort.  (A bustier friend (38DD) loves this bra specifically because it flattens her out a bit, so your mileage may vary.)

For me, the biggest benefit of this bra is that I feel like I’m going braless without the sheepishness of having my nipples out all the time.  Which, as a modest person who worries about running into people while walking the dogs, isn’t ideal.

In addition to the v-neck style I bought, True also offers a scoopneck style with or without “lift.”  And they offer a style with a front closure for people who cannot pull a bra over their heads.  Their sizes run from 30B to 40DD though that varies by bra.

Bottom line, I like this bra enough that I bought two.  I don’t see it as a workhorse in my wardrobe, but it’s a comfortable bra with some support for casual days.  Was it worth $44?  Of that, I’m not as certain.
