The Edit: 9 Chic Mid-Price Work Blazers

Feb 6, 2018

A new jacket can create several new outfits with existing pieces.  Old blouse and skirt, add a new jacket.  Jeans and a t-shirt, add a new jacket.  Sheath dress that’s been worn to death, add a new jacket.  Here are nine blazers that caught my eye.

M&S Cotton Peplum Jacket ($96)

Express Pick Puff Blazer ($118)

T Tahari Mini-Dot Blazer ($148)

Mural Curve Open Front Blazer ($74)

Halogen Shawl Collar Jacket ($99)

Rachel Roy Floral Blazer ($149)

Yes, this pattern is a lot.  Imagine it with black separates instead of matching pants.

Topshop Chuck On Blazer ($80)

Nine West Hardware Detail Blazer ($99)

Calvin Klein Flare Sleeve Blazer ($139)

I have a ruffle sleeve blazer that zips up the front to a round neck. It’s burgundy and the zipper is gold tone. How would you style it with pants? In plus size? Thanks

    • Belle says:

Grey, navy, ivory separates. I would try a simple blouse and wide leg pants in the same color. So navy pants, sleek navy top, blazer with it.

I feel like bell sleeves and tie sleeves take away from the professionalism and sleekness of a blazer but I wonder if you have seen them styled in a way that still looks professional and powerful?

    • Belle says:

This is not a blazer for your most conservative days (court, committee hearings, etc.), but I think it still works for regular work days. I think you just need to keep the other pieces very sleek. No bow blouses, no flare skirts or pants. Everything else needs to be straight and sleek.

  3. Susan says:

    Belle,
I noticed that almost all of the blazers (save the 9 West one) are all pretty long, not the shrunken style that has been around a while. Is shrunken out of style now? I haven’t bought a new blazer in a few years and I wonder if mine are dated now. Thoughts?

    • Belle says:

I didn’t see as many short ones, but I did see a few. I tend to gravitate toward the long ones, so this is probably just personal preference.

  4. Stephanie says:

I’m finding that there is such a divide between the reasonably priced ones and the ultra expensive ones. I’m just not finding the quality or style I want at the lower price points. More like polyester, shapeless, meant for wearing with jeans and by someone much younger than me who doesn’t work in an office. The nordstrom in house brands tend to fall in this category. I would pay more for something better, but the next level up that I like is like Smythe, Veronica Beard, and Rebecca Taylor so $500-700. I have no interest in a plain black Tahari suit. I really don’t know where to shop anymore.

  5. EMily says:

I’ve been looking for longer blazers – almost similar in length to a cardigan. Do you have any suggestions?

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
