Eight Tips for Organizing Your Bathroom

Feb 12, 2018

Are you beauty products spilling from every drawer and cabinet in your bathroom?  Keep your bottles, compacts, and jars in check with these easy tips for organizing your bathroom.  Just because we love beauty doesn’t mean we have to let it get the best of us.

Get a Trash Bag.  No, for real.  A black one, the heavy duty kind.  It’s time to purge.

I start with any skincare products that I haven’t used in six months.  Yes, they cost money, but if you’re not using them, you’re probably not going to start.  If you want, give them to friends, but get them out of your bathroom.

Then, I use this chart to start tossing expired makeup. I also toss anything that’s broken and anything that looks bad on me (adios, coral lip gloss).  Then, I toss any sample sizes or travel sizes that I kept just because but haven’t used in more than is months.  Yes, those hotel shampoos are free, but the space in your tiny bathroom isn’t.

Address Your Drawers. The items you use everyday need to be kept handy.  I use this bamboo drawer organizer set ($22) to keep my top drawer items neat and tidy.  I divide my items by category — contacts/eye care, acne products, bobby pins/rubberbands — so they’re easy to find.  Some people prefer the clear, plastic organizers, but after some time passes, they always end up looking dirty and worn out.

For organizing the other drawers, I use inexpensive pouches to keep things organized.  Again, group them by category so you know where to look for things.  The free pouches you get when you purchase makeup are always a good option.

Protect your Hair Tools.  How many curling irons do you own?  One, three, five?  I have four, plus a blowdryer that I love dearly.  So why are you just throwing them in a drawer or worse, leaving them in your sink all the time (you know who you are).   Corral your hair appliances with an appliance stand or styling station.  They keep all the cords out of the way and everything visible.

If you lack counter space, try hair tool holster that hangs off the side of your vanity.  They also make a hot tool holder that hangs off your cabinet door.  Both can be used while tools are still hot.

Secure Tiny Items . Keep your bobby pins, tweezers, and eyebrow scissors handy with this magnetized Vanitykeeper wood strip.  You’ll never lose your nail clippers again.

Keep Your Mirror and Countertop Clean. My bathroom gets dirty long before it’s time to clean the rest of the house, and the vanity takes the worst of it.  Between toothpaste spots on the mirror and hairspray residue on the sink, it’s a mess.  I finally started keeping disinfecting glass wipes un my bathroom for quick touch ups.  So much better.

Tidy Up the Countertop.  I use these $9 World Market trays to organize the handful of skincare products I keep out for daily use.  But if you need to go vertical, this Spinning Cosmetic Organizer keeps everything right where you need it.

Also, if you’re like me and you tend to leave hairspray and lotion just sitting out after every use, grab a plastic tub to keep them in.  Keeping your daily essentials in one place so you don’t have to search for them is a big time saver.  It’s also really easy for cleaning up.

Buy Some Hooks.  Living with a messy boy, I find his robe and his towels everywhere.  Strewn on the floor.  Draped over the railing.  Hanging from the door handle.  On top of the dog kennel (that one’s a mystery).  And since our bathrooms only have one towel rack, organization is an issue.

I use this over-the-door hanger for his favorite fluffy pink bathrobe (I swear was a 50s housewife in a past life), and these Command hooks for the extra towels.  Just getting them off of the floor makes me feel so much better.

Organize Your Shower Essentials.  The last area to tackle is inside the shower.  So many shampoos.  To keep them off the floor and within reach, you have a few options.

If you have multiple people sharing a shower,  try a tension shower caddy that tucks into the corner and provides multiple shelves.  The sleek Tooletries case above will cling to any glass or tile surface, so you’ll never hunt for your razor again.  And this Flex Caddy hangs off your shower head to give you a bit of extra storage.

So how do you keep your bathroom organized?  Are you a minimalist or are products pouring out of every drawer?  Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Great tips! I have zero storage space in my bathroom so I rely on a shoe organizer (like this one: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-24-Pocket-Over-Medium-Size-Organizer/dp/B07227PWVP/ref=lp_11601917011_1_9?s=storageorganization&ie=UTF8&qid=1518449137&sr=1-9) on the back of my door to keep things organized and off the counter.

Can vouch for the Tooletries shower organizer. I’ve had it for a few months (glass shower), we stuff it full of shampoo and liquid soap and it hasn’t even threatened to move.

I recently bought a Jerrybox from Amazon to hold my counter clutter and I’m in love. I bought the transparent square version after getting frustrated with the lack of space in my small bathroom. It keeps my skincare and makeup accessible and looks like a display. I dare say it’s pretty. It holds a lot and I like that it easily fit all of my essentials as well as some products I’d like to wear more often.

Give away or actually use freebies, samples, and hotel toiletries rather than letting them collect dust. Just because they are small, doesn’t mean they don’t expire. I toss or give away samples that I can’t use (i.e., blonde highlighting shampoo when I’m a brunette). I relegate shampoos and conditioners that aren’t my favorite, but still do the job to “workout shampoo” – when I’m so sweaty from an evening spin class that I can’t not wash my hair, but I know I’ll wash it again anyway in the morning with the good stuff. Also consider donating toiletries from hotels or that you received for free to shelters.

If you live in DC, N Street Village (a women’s shelter on 14th and N, NW) collects hotel sized shampoo and soap to give to the women who come in. I now make a point to take all of the small soaps from hotels to give to them!

Living with a cat, any open storage option for small baubles is just asking for things to disappear : ) That magnetic strip looks awesome, but I can guarantee that my cat will have stolen everything within 5 mins and stashed them in his hiding spots throughout my apartment. For things like bobby pins, hair rubber bands, and makeup brushes, I’ve been using pretty glass see-through jewelry boxes (those square ones with the lift lids that attached with a chain) from Target. Everything looks neat, i can see what’s in the containers, and nothing goes missing. If only the cat was as well behaved as my dog…

  7. Jen says:

I had so many sample and travel size toiletries I was able to put together kits to keep in my car to hand out to the homeless. I put them in gallon sized bags along with gloves, granola bars, tampons, hand-sanitizer, a few dollars, and a note of encouragement.

    • Jennifer says:

Jen – That is awesome and a great service. Slightly off topic, but the fact that you include tampons is great. There is a great need for feminine hygiene products in shelters, along with underwear and bras. Those items never seem to make it into the donation bags when folks clean out their closets.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
