Saw It On Social: My Pillow

May 21, 2018

Unless you live in a place blissfully free of infomercials, you’ve probably heard of My Pillow.  According to the advertisements, it’s The Most Comfortable Pillow You’ll Ever Own.  But is that really true?

For years, I’ve played pillow roulette.  I go to the store, squeeze and feel every firm pillow in the place, buy the latest and greatest option, and then be disappointed after a few nights.  So when My Pillow looted and pillaged by Facebook feed and my TV schedule, I thought, why not?

The pillow isn’t smooth like a traditional pillow.  The fill is lumpy, which takes some getting used to.  First, you have to fluff and shape it for maximum support.  And over time, the fill gets compressed, which makes it less supportive.

The second thing about the pillow is that it’s printed with the My Pillow logo.  I have white pillow cases, and even at 800 thread count, you can still see the logo through the fabric.  It’s less than ideal.

After the first few weeks of sleeping on the pillow, I wasn’t wow’ed by it.  It was fine, but it was hardly the most comfortable pillow I’d ever owned.  Then, I a friend mentioned that he felt the same way until he washed the pillow.

Washing the pillow completely revived it.  I fact, it made it better than it was when I first bought it.  Now, I wash it every other week to keep it in its best shape.  Regular washings have improved it by leaps and bounds.

So is the My Pillow for real?  I like it, but like most infomercial products its performance suffers in comparison to the hype.  If you’re looking for a supportive pillow that lets you sleep in any position, it’s worth a shot.  If only they made one without that silly printed logo all over it.

  1. Aly says:

I just found out from a co-worker that is uncle is the My Pillow inventor. He said that he gets a new pillow at every holiday (lol), but the most interesting thing he said was that when you first take it out of the packaging, you should put it in the dryer for 5-10min to fluff it up. The foam pieces expand and then fill the whole space. Of all the marketing, I never heard that!

  2. MOnica T says:

I recommend a water pillow to anyone who has trouble with neck pain or tension. Like anyone who works at a computer I have a significant amount of tension in my neck and shoulders and it used to burn when I would lay on a regular pillow, a memory foam pillow, any darn pillow! The water pillow has a bladder you fill partially with water, and a soft pillowy outercovering. When the weight of your head displaces the water, it cradles your neck perfectly. It takes a few tries to figure out how much water you want in it, but whats cool is it’s completely adjustable. When you press out all the air in the bladder there isn’t any watery sound either and the pillow stays in place since it’s heavy. Been a game changer for me.

I put allergy covers / pillow protectors on our pillows before the pillowcase. That helps hide any pattern on the pillow itself. Supposedly reduces the dust-mites, too.

Thanks for sharing the info on washing and drying the My Pillow. My husband just bought one this spring (something about using frequent flier miles).

  4. Jen says:

I’m surprised you endorse this company after their response to Laura Ingram’s insults to the Parkland student. I remember in the past you decided not to purchase Ivanka’s brands. I am not offering judgement here, it’s a choice.

It would be interesting to get your take on politics and boycotts and if/how that changes your purchasing habits.

    • Belle says:

I bought this long before Parkland, but I didn’t know about Ingraham being associate with MP, I don’t watch Fox.

  5. M says:

I second the pillow protector! It might help cover the logo

  6. Anne says:

I bought the Coop Home Goods – PREMIUM Adjustable Loft – Shredded Hypoallergenic…etc. pillow on Amazon ($59.99) for my husband, and while he didn’t like it, I love it. It’s my favorite pillow, and I liked it as it came – I didn’t take out any of the stuffing as suggested to “customize” it – it has a good weight, I don’t have a problem with it being hot, and it washes well.

  7. E says:

Not a substantive comment – but – I love Saw It On Social. Every time I get inundated with ads, I always want to hear from a real person who actually tried it out. Thank you!

  8. Rosemary Powers says:

I echo a previous commenter – I can’t believe you would promote ‘my pillow’ without providing the caution that it is a politically active company opposing gun control, continuing to support Laura Ingram and being very critical of the Parkland teens. I am disappointed. To me, a companies’ public persona is as important as the value of their merchandise. You should at least provide the footnote that a company has been active in a political issue. Not saying you shouldn’t review/promote a company and its product, but you should provide that information as well.

  9. Minnesota says:

MyPillow is a Minnesota company that has been involved in a lot of controversy. It had a “Buy one/get one” marketing program for a long time (including at the Minnesota State Fair) that resulted in its BBB rating going from A to F (because the sale never went away, and because $89 for two when the price for one was $49.99 just isn’t “Buy One, Get One Free.”). It is embroiled in a number of consumer protection class action lawsuits. It paid a significant fine because of inappropriate health-related claims in its marketing materials. This has all gotten a fair amount of press here in the Twin Cities because they are local. It has been enough to dissuade me from purchasing their product.

  10. Orla says:

I have the Casper pillow and I love it. Worth every penny!

  11. Anna says:

MyPillow is based near me so I’ve heard a decent about it, and the owner/founder is a big Trump supporter, so seconding Jen’s comment Interesting that they’re better after washing!

My husband has been complaining about his pillows, so I’m always curious how others feel about theirs.

  12. SC says:

I have a memory foam pillow from Amazon, and I freakin love it, it’s just the right amount of squishy and it supports my neck. My boyfriend sleeps on a My Pillow, and he loves his. Definitely heed Aly’s tip about fluffing it in the dryer from time to time, it works.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
