The Weekly Edit: On the Road Again

Jun 20, 2018

This week was a little more eventful than usual.  I spent five days in D.C. where I visited friends, soaked up some of the city, and hosted a kickass event at MM. LaFleur with Hitha.  Here are some of the things and places I loved on my trip.

I visited The Wing’s Georgetown outpost several times on my visit, and I loved it.  The women-only club was such a quiet, peaceful space.  The perfect refuge.

From quiet corners to get work done to a shower room where you can get ready after the gym, The Wing has something for everyone.  I also loved the cafe, which might have the best $15 lunch in Georgetown.  And I got to run into several readers who were also Wing Women, so that was a nice benefit.

Meet the MM. LaFleur Taylor dress, it’s basically my secret weapon.  This dress is forgiving, flattering and comfortable. And did I mention it has pockets?  It’s a working woman’s dream dress.

I don’t usually buy pieces in multiple colors.  But this dress comes in six colors, and I own three of them (plum, indigo, viridian).  Apparently, I like it a lot.

The one nice thing about traveling is that it gives me a lot of time to read.  This trip I finished two books — American Princess and Red Sparrow — and started a third book, When Life Gives You Lululemons.

WLGYL picks up with Emily from The Devil Wears Prada as she takes on life as an image consultant in L.A..  Her career isn’t going according to plan, and she gets roped into helping a Senator’s wife rehab her image post-DUI.  It’s an easy, beachy read that is perfect for summer.

When my last pair of Ugg slippers wore out in February, I decided that I was done.  It was time to end my love-hate relationship and move on.  But after miles walked around D.C., my feet were battered, bruised, and begging for the comfort of shearling slippers.

When I got home, the first thing I bought these sale-priced slippers at DSW.  They’re just too perfect for travel, and as long as I don’t wear them in public it’s fine.  At least that’s the lie that I’m telling myself.

I was at the DC event last week and really enjoyed it — thank you! Hitha said you were going to provide legal aid at the border?

  2. Jess says:

I bought these ll bean wicked good lodge boots 1 1/2 years ago and I love them! I’d never wear them out of the house but they are perfect for fall and winter here in Minnesota.

Those slippers look so cozy! I miss DC!

  4. eilanora says:

What do you wear with the Taylor dress? I love all of the MM LaFleur sleeveless dresses, but can never figure out what to pair them with in my freezing cold office.

  5. Jenn says:

How long do the UGG slippers last? I just bought my first pair this past winter and really love them…

    • Belle says:

I usually went 18 months of HARD wear with a pair before I felt like they were so dirty I should buy another pair. But I also buy the light grey, so a darker color won’t have that problem.

  6. Mo says:

How do you style the Taylor? I need sleeves at work and I find that blazers/cardigans detract from the dress and add bulk so I find mine sits in the closet a lot.

    • Belle says:

When I need sleeves, I wear a v-neck, one button blazer cut so the v comes at the same spot or lower than the knot. Sometimes, I wear a long “car coat” style jacket. I’ve never found it to be bulky. Maybe try a slimmer fitting blazer? I have one or two that don’t button, because I neither need for them to nor intend them to. This keeps the look slimming when layering.

  7. Crystal says:

@Mo: A cute blazer can work. I’ve also had good luck with the Spanx arm tights — they’re comfortable and don’t add any bulk under the dress (since they stop at your bra line), and they come in several options (opaque, sheer, tiny dots, lace, “cable”). I wore the black lace under the green Taylor dress for a wedding, and I got lots of compliments. In general, I think the Spanx arm tights are an expensive but SO useful addition to a work wardrobe, particularly if sleeves are required.

  8. CR says:

@Crystal (reply not working): I am fascinated by the arm tights. how do you wear them with normal (nonfancy) clothes? do they feel strange to wear?? Tell us more! (also, Abra, thoughts?)

    • Belle says:

The arm tights basically just add a sheer sleeve to things. I thought about having some made by a tailor to match a dress I own that’s sleeveless, but I haven’t done it yet. The fact that the spanx aren’t a perfect color match bugs me, but I can see them being useful.

  9. Kelly says:

@Crystal, @Mo: I’m planning on the Taylor dress for a wedding next year, so I’m starting the hunt for ways to style it at work after that. Totally wishing arm tights were around 6 years ago when I started my last job. The dress code required sleeves and none of my dresses had them.

  10. Crystal says:

@CR (and @Mo): The Spanx arm tights are basically “tights” material in a crop top. No, they do not compress your arms! 🙂 They’re bracelet length (possibly full-arm-length if you are petite) and stop right around your lower bra line. So you just throw on bra + arm tights + dress. I used them all winter to jazz up my more summery dresses. So for example, I’d wear the black cable (sweater-look) arm tights under a sleeveless, flouncier MM LaFleur dress. Added black tights and boots and BOOM — comfortable and warm, with the benefit of my summer dresses not going unworn for months! They are overpriced but have been resilient, not to mention wardrobe-changing!

  11. Loving this new feature!! I completely agree about travel and reading. Just finished The Underground Railroad (much heavier) on my last trip and I’m ready for a light read for my trip to California in July. This sounds perfect!

  12. Kellie Marie says:

I really, REALLY disliked The Devil Wears Prada. It was a year of her life, for her career, and her family/friends can’t even give her that space. It basically told women that they have to prioritize family over career. Can’t stand that noise.

  13. Anna says:

@Kellie Marie, I loved the movie but that part annoyed the crap out of me. The scene where they yank the phone away when Miranda calls made my blood boil. This was her job, and clearly she didn’t enjoy having to sacrifice her lifestyle for it.

  14. Kate says:

Your sense of style is spot on for working women. Thanks for sharing the secret weapon.

  15. Adrianne says:

Love your blog and perspective on the world, thank you for shairing it!. Bought the uggs through your link so hopefully you will get benefit from the sale!

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
