Three Easy Outfits for August Workdays

Aug 7, 2018

As summer wanes, the clothes you bought in May and June start to lose their luster.  End-of-season closet boredom is a real thing.  But here are three wonderfully fun and easy outfits for August workdays.

Professional // Malachite Curio Stud ($77) //  J.Crew Faux Wrap Top ($68, seven colors) // Edie Full-Length Pant ($188, petite and tall) // BR Side Cutout Kitten Heel ($128)

Business Casual // Chico’s Mixed Metal Coin Drops ($20) // J.Crew Tie-Waist Shirtdress ($98, four colors) // Nine West Block Sandal ($80)

Casual // Kenneth Jay Lane Gold Tone Necklace ($36) // H&M Cotton Stripe Dress ($20) // Steve Madden Alina Sandal ($59)

Professional.  This outfit is colorful, but suit jacket-eligible.  Because, sadly, for those of us in conservative offices almost never get a day off from the strict dress code.  But I thought the field green blouse brightened the look up a bit.  You could also swap out a navy blazer for a white one.

If you’re looking for new suiting to get your through the year, Ann Taylor has some good choices in their sale section.  Plus-size?  Give the suits at Eloquii a look.

Business Casual.  This look probably tilts to the conservative side of business casual, but I just loved this dress so much.  It would be perfect for a conference or for a casual off-site.  It comes in several colors, so if the red isn’t for you, you might find another that is.

If you like shirt dresses, this one from COS is a more modern feel.  For something more playful, try this sleeveless Sail to Sable dress.  Plus-size?  Try this sleeveless Tahari number or this 525 America dress in several colors.

You could probably also get away with a flat sandal in some offices.  These taupe Sole Society flat sandals are so cute with their knotted vamp, and their just $32.

Casual.  An oldie, but a goodie.  A striped dress is the one you will reach for all summer long.  Work, play, pool time, vacation, etc..  And at $20, anything can happen to it and you won’t cry in your pina colada about it.

I added a long necklace with a turquoise accent and a coral sandals to bring in some color.  I also considered these yellow flats with this green tassel necklace.

Plus-size?  Try this tie-sleeve tee dress.  Maternity?  Try this Ingrid and Isabel dress.

Hi Abra – are you comfortable once again with the quality of JCrew garments? It’s been ages since I’ve purchased work clothes from there but I do appreciate the extended sizing and would like to give it another shot. But, of course, I am nervous about whether the clothes will last. Would appreciate your thoughts!

So I’ve been ordering from there more often. Not everything has been great, but there are more things that I think are well made and worth keeping than in the past. The items made with cotton have been good to me, hit or miss on some of the others.

Oh man, I love all of these outfits! And I think I could make each work for my office which is even better. I’m definitely ordering that blouse in a few colors.

This is a great post! It reminds me of the posts you used to do before law school. I just can’t put together a complete outfit without your detailed instructions. It makes all the difference!

Thank you for posting maternity options. I am wrapping up my first trimester and will soon have to buy real maternity clothes. Finding fashionable and professional options that aren’t cold shoulder (not work appropriate) or childish (plaid shirts w overalls, gross) has been a challenge. Please keep on including maternity options in your posts!
PS. You’re amazing. I have been reading this page for over 8 years now, I know you’ll find your footing and your next step soon. You’ve got a lot of women rooting for you!!

  5. Pam says:

I have the Screw Edie pant in white and i love it. A very substantial fabric and well constructed. I just might have to get the navy!

I love this post too. I always adored your two ways; or three ways posts and this is similar – love to see your outfit assemblies. Thanks!

The Find: An Affordable Work Dress

This winter was particularly hard on my psyche, on my self-esteem, and on my waistline. As we move into spring, I need to make a plan for how I am going to dress this additional weight over the months of work that it will likely take to shed it. So I was so glad to […]
