Personally, I’m always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught. — Winston Churchill

Subtle. Styling a cardigan for every occasion.  Because, why not?

Loud. The prettiest $19 leopard scarf is now back in stock.

Chaos. How to deal with second-hand stress, because it’s no longer avoidable.

Order. I always love Easy, Tiger’s fun planners and notepads.  And I couldn’t say no to the “kicking ass, taking notes” pen.

Departures. Thinking about quitting your job?  Read this first.

Arrivals. & Other Stories new drop is full of great pieces, like this wrap dress and cuff bracelet.

Hammer. When sexual harassment is borderline, or just creepy, how should it be handled?

Nails. Check out these hot nail polish trends. I’m into this taupe polish.

Morning. Say hello to The Power Breakfast (way better than a power lunch).

Night. I’ve been wearing these Baublebar earrings on all my casual dinner dates.

When Kyle and I started dating, he proudly proclaimed that he never got sick.  But since moving in together, I’ve learned that this was basically a lie.  He’s Typhoid Mary in a blazer.

This winter, I am determined not to lose whole weeks of my life to illness.  I’ve got the vitamins out.  I’m washing my hands regularly.  I’m avoiding common surfaces when possible.  And I’m drinking this immunity boosting shot with ginger, turmeric and lemon.  (I even bought these little glass bottles to put them in.)

Will it work?  I’m not a doctor, but it can’t hurt, and hopefully it will improve my immunity.  Of course, so will that decontamination shower that I just installed in the garage for Kyle to use when he gets home.

How was the appt with the doggie orthopedist? Any luck on the house this weekend?

    • Belle says:

No house luck. We postponed the doggy ortho for a week because another vet said it might be healing on its own. Thanks for asking.

  2. Erica says:

Any life updates coming up about the transition back to DC/ how you made that choice? If it’s too personal, I understand! I enjoy following along, and appreciate your vulnerability. Good luck with the house.

  3. CAIt says:

    Man Flu is REAL 😉

  4. Alison says:

Hand washing is key! Last year I was terrified of getting that miserable flu going around (first year in business school and everyone was dropping like flies). I got into some good habits that I think really saved me: avoid touching my face when I’m out (and possibly picking up germs), and when I get home the first thing I do is wash my hands thoroughly. I just takes a minute and I think it makes a big difference.

Of course, it’s still a million degrees where I live so flu season isn’t here yet…but never too early to start preparing.

  5. Megan says:

Try to get in a little exercise every day, even if it’s just a short walk outside. I find this the best way to boost immunity. I rarely get sick but I have a coworker who coughs and sneezes all over the office so handeashung and Lysol wipes are very important too!

  6. Sheena says:

Last December EVERYONE in my office got the flu in the weeks leading up to my master’s graduation ceremony. My dad was on his way and I was hellbent that I would NOT get sick. I disinfected the office everyday (wiping down surfaces, etc.) and every morning drank 4 oz of pure cranberry juice mixed with 8 oz of water and Emergen-C along with a B-12 vitamin. I never got the flu and almost one year later that vitamin drink is still part of my daily routine.

  7. Eleni says:

I work on a hospital campus and cannot stress enough the importance of hand washing and staying hydrated! Clorox wipes are a staple in my desk drawer. I also drink a shot of Lemon, ginger, cayenne pepper and raw honey every morning.

  8. Jenn says:

I really like my neti pot whenever I’m congested. Not the sexiest tool, but it works.

  9. Jill says:

I’m always promoting the flu shot. Had the flu years ago and have never been so sick. Haven’t missed a flu shot since. And the flu is dangerous to vulnerable populations.

  10. Kate says:

I got this tip from an old roommate who is a doctor: drinking a full cup of warm water before bed helps you sleep better at night. I followed and found it enhancing my overall health too.

  11. ~M says:

I’m VERY skeptical of essential oils and the people who use them in place of medicine. HOWEVER, whenever I feel myself getting sick, I mix a few drops of this with a carrier oil and put it on my lymph nodes and my chest (lungs) in the morning and before I go to bed. It works surprisingly well at cutting off colds etc. at the knees. Good luck this year!

    Love that quote!

A few coworkers and I use a similar ginger / turmeric tonic and we all swear it keeps us from passing colds back and forth, along with hand sanitizer and Lysol desk wipes. I try to take zinc and selenium during flu season too, since I can’t do the shot. But really the best way to not get sick from your significant other is to sleep in different rooms when they’re sick… I wouldn’t let him sneeze on me in the daytime, why would I let him do it at night?

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
