Ask the Edit: Clear Bags for Events

Oct 30, 2018

Dressing for sporting events and concerts is always a challenge.  You want to be casual and comfortable, but look stylish as well.  And since many venues require a clear plastic purse, your handbag now presents an additional wrinkle.

This Hat Attack Stadium Bag ($80) would be my first choice.  It’s completely clear, fairly sturdy and has a thick crossbody strap.  Plus, it has a stylish look to it.

Other options include this round Pixie Market bag.  It’s a more unique option.

You can also find some lovely options on Etsy.  Lots of Daughters of the SEC making cute, clear bags.  I like this simple crossbody which can be customized.  You can also customize this Ypsilon bag with different colored handles and straps.  And these $15 monogrammable crossbody bags seem very popular.

So timely. Going to an NFL game this weekend. Alas, I already have the most basic utilitarian clear bag from Amazon. Good to know more attractive options exist.

Wow, I’ve never heard of requiring a clear purse! Sounds like this is for the NFL? Other events?

I went to a couple MLB games this summer and this wasn’t a requirement.

Such a good idea for a post! I went to a Giants game with my mom recently and I knew to bring a teeny tiny bag (basically a wallet on a string) but she hadn’t seen the rules and had to use the “bag check” offered outside the stadium. So thanks for this!

I’m so glad they at least offered a bag check! I went on a date to a Redskins game — I did not buy the tickets and had no idea about the (then-new) policy. I showed up and was not allowed to bring in my (brand new, very nice) bag, there was no bag check available, and we of course had no car to stow it in since we took metro. There were purses everywhere outside — as well as several very unhappy couples who were missing the game. I couldn’t believe they could offer people no option to check a bag or go through heightened security.

My local soccer team (Columbus Crew) won’t let anything larger than 5 in x 8 in x1 in. It doesn’t have to be clear, but it sure is SMALL!

  5. Meredith says:

I knew about the clear bag policy for my local SEC college football team and NFL team, but recently learned that it applies to other events hosted in their venues. For example, I took my daughter and her friends to see Taylor Swift in concert at a NFL stadium, and the clear bag policy was in effect. Definitely something to keep in mind if you are attending an event at a large venue!

  6. HDS says:

Thank you SO much for posting this. My workplace began requiring clear bags a couple years ago and I wanted to ask you, but I felt it was a little niche for a recommendation on the blog. The requirement was kind of a buzzkill on all of the awesome work bag recommendations you’ve made over the years, but these are great – never knew there were so many options! Thank you again!

  7. Kate says:

Color Tribe are great because offer multiple wear styles and colors that are still translucent and approved sizes.

I went to an NFL game with a clear stadium bag and a small opaque purse. Security confiscated the latter. Wouldn’t let me bring it in even empty. I don’t think I read the restrictions carefully enough. Fyi to fellow game-goers.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
