The Beauty Edit: The Hairspray is Amazing, but It’s a Problem

Jan 8, 2019

Have you ever come across a beauty product and immediately fallen in love with it? Fallen so hard that you wonder how you you lived without it?  Meet The Hairspray.

Last week, I was getting ready for work when I realized that I was out of hairspray.  Luckily, my AirBnB had a can of hairspray in the cabinet.  But it was flexible hold. “Ugh,” I thought, “I need strong hold, what mermaid-haired goddess only needs flexible hold?”

Ultimately, I decided it was better than nothing, but wasn’t expecting much.  So imagine my surprise when, at 7:00PM, my hair was still going strong.

Kevin Murphy Bedroom Hair Texturizing Hairspray is amazing.  It gives you the kind of touchable, strong hold that you thought only existed in heaven.  It doesn’t give you helmet head.  And, best of all, it gives your hair just the right amount of texture and movement.

I just can’t say enough good things about it.

But there is a problem…

Kevin Murphy products are produced in Australia.  They’re available in some US-based salons.  But if you want to buy the Bedroom Hair hairspray right now, online, there is only one can available on Amazon and it will cost $48.

Yes, you read that right.

Or you can buy the one available can of travel size hairspray for $28.

Yes, you also read that right.

Obviously, these prices are madness.  I’m going out in search of a salon that sells Kevin Murphy products this weekend in the hopes they cost a bit less.  I’ll report back.  But this hairspray is worth the extra effort.

{this post contains links that may generate commission for the author, if any of you feel bold enough to pay dinner date prices for a can of hairspray.  I’m not here to judge.}

My salon sells Kevin Murphy products, and I am in l-o-v-e with them. Full Again is pure magic.

  2. S says:

A lot of salons in the area where I grew up (NJ) sell it…but yup, it’s just as expensive as what you’re listing here.

  3. J says:

My salon sells these products. Feel free to use the email I provided to contact me to get the information if you’d like. My stylist is the owner, and I have no doubt she’d ship the products.

  4. JJ says:

I started going to a new salon about 6 months ago and the stylists use KM products. I now use the angel wash and blonde angel and LOVE them.Only downside is that they’re as expensive in the salon as online – boo. If anyone finds them cheaper, please share!!

  5. Sarah says:

Try a salon republic! My hairdresser is in one and they sell it and it’s way less than online. Still expensive, but less!

  6. R says:

St. Germain and Molecule in DC sell Kevin Murphy. I LOVE the Repair-Me.Wash and Rinse, but HATE the price at $40 each. My guess is that the hairspray is right around that price in a salon as well.

  7. Barbara Lisette says:

Have you ever tried the Surface Products? Their CURLS FINISHING SPRAY is my favorite when it comes to retaining soft yet stay in place curls. The best part is it doesn’t feel like hairspray. You can run your fingers through it and it lasts all day.

  8. Suz says:

That’s funny – that brand looked familiar to me so I checked the locator . . . .the salon where I take my kids carries that! Not the fancy-pants place I go to, but the suburban, chain-ish place we use for little boys’ haircuts. Score!

  9. Rachel says:

Oh Abra. ???? I am currently in the middle of a Kevin Murphy heart break. My salon used it for years, and I loved it. It’s the only salon brand I’ve ever considered worth the price ($30ish for a can of hairspray). My hair was lush, bouncy, full of life and moisture. And then, last summer, my salon switched to something else. Cue the sobs. I’ve tried the new brand. Nope, not good enough. I’ve tried several brands at Ulta. Nope, still not doing it for me. I just ordered Wen in one final desperate attempt at happiness.

My heart, or at least my hair, clearly belongs to KM. A few other salons in my town sell his products, so I can get hair spray, but no one sells the largest (and best value) of the shampoo and conditioner. As much as I love the products, my wallet doesn’t appreciate buying the non-economy sizes. ($30 for 250ml vs $70 for 1000.) I hope you find the hairspray and live happily ever after.

  10. Jessica says:

I think we all glazed over an important part here… that the Airbnb host put $48 hairspray in their bathroom for guests to use. Superhost for sure!

  11. Caitlin says:

This just in: my hair salon in Bozeman carries Kevin Murphy products. Worth the drive from Helena? Perhaps! (Bliss Hair Studio)

  12. Cati says:

I haven’t tried the Kevin Murphy hairspray but feel similarly about the nexus comb thru hairspray that you can buy a travel size of at target for less than 5$

  13. JEn says:

Salon Off Broasway (Helena) has a KM instructor who also retails the product. Ericka is fab.

  14. Jenna says:

I used to buy Kevin Murphy at Salon Nouveau in downtown Spokane. Granted, that was 10 years ago, but you might check there.

  15. Cindy says:

KW is a cruelty free, green company. Might be why they are pricy but makes them worthwhile to support.

  16. Anne says:

My salon started carrying Kevin Murphy products about a year ago and now I can’t live without either the bedroom hairspray or body.builder spray mousse. I tried last week while on a trip and as soon as I got home I was at the salon buying travel sizes. At my salon they are considerably cheaper, but still pricey. But the difference they make in my fine, straight hair is amazing.

  17. Kristen says:

HUGE fan of all KM products and I looooooove the Bedroom Hair. So, so, so much that I forgot all about the Oribe. Love that you discovered it too!

  18. Lydia says:

My salon uses km products and I like the texture and smell. I’m in Canada, and last I checked, they were about 35 Canadian dollars, for the cream/ gel. I haven’t tried the hairspray though. Just to say, maybe this is one of those products that cheaper here!

  19. Rosie says:

Have the same problem with KM texture master hope you post your findings

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]
