There weren’t many gowns on the carpet that excited me. Most left me disappointed, confounded or queasy, but a few of the frocks drew a positive reaction. So let’s all take a moment to revel in the splendor of dresses that cost more than our monthly salaries. Julia Louis Dreyfuss in Narciso Rodriguez Petite ladies […]
What a weird night! None of the winners had prepared remarks, because when you have a 1 in five chance of winning something, why bother to scribble down a few thank yous? Brooklyn 99 and American Hustle both beat out the competition, though I don’t know how. I mean, I knew that you could bribe the […]

I missed the Emmy’s yesterday, but what would this blog be without award show fashion roundups? As usual, all images are from Just Jared, check out that site for full Emmy coverage. Here are my best and worst from the 2013 Emmy Awards. The Worst Dressed List Michelle Dockery in Prada Who knew Lady Mary […]
I’ve been watching the Oscars since I was young enough to need training wheels, and over the years, I’ve been wow’ed by several gowns. Even in recent memory, there have been spectacular looks on the red carpet. Michelle Williams in yellow Vera Wang. Halle Berry in Elie Saab. Reese Witherspoon in vintage Dior. Cate Blanchett…in […]

(If you find Joan Rivers-esque fashion commentary offensive, this is not the post for you, however, some of your fellow readers look forward to this post all year. So come back tomorrow when things will be less snarky.) Watching the Oscars this year was even more painful than usual. It was like an awards ceremony […]
Like most Americans, I don’t watch the SAG awards. That’s why they’re on TNT, the channel dedicated to reruns of Angel and Las Vegas, and not a network. But halfway through the show, people started tweeting at me about how great the dresses were, so I decided to take a look.
Tis true that the ratio of good gowns to hideous monstrosities was much better. This begs the question, are they learning from their mishaps or is this a cruel joke to make me hope for a glamorous Oscar carpet? There’s no way to know. So let’s treat the SAG awards to their very own red carpet rundown using reviews of three sentences or less.
Jennifer Lawrence in Dior
The dress fits nicely, but isn’t terribly exciting. The hair is wilted and depressing. More proof that burgundy lips aren’t for everyone.
Kerry Washington in Rodarte
Perhaps the only Rodarte gown I’ve ever loved. The bodice is sublime. Would have appreciated a bit more fullness in the hairdo.
Anne Hathaway in Giambatista Valli
Oh goodie, a dress that doesn’t touch the floor. And another frock by Sybil that can’t decide if it’s short or long. At least her hair looks nice.
Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen
A much better dress than the Globes, at least this one flatters her figure. The necklace looks like it came from the prom jewelry section at Claire’s. And any person born before 1992 will be unable to look past the obvious Jessica Rabbit homage.
Naomi Watts in Marchesa
The finger waves, the pale grey, lace column gown and the just-right pink lip are a vision. And the cabochon stone in that ring is extraordinary.

This year, due to the lackluster choices on the red carpet, I decided to do away with the close-but-no-cigar post. There were lots of “meh” choices–including Kristen Bell who looked like her gown was strangling her, Taylor Swift whose dress was drama in the back and 1997 prom dress from the front. There were a […]
