State of the Blog: A Programming Note

Today is Day 75 of our 90 day legislative session.  Everything is on fire — either the bills are moving fast and furious, or they are burned to ash.  Congress, even with all its end-of-year bluster, has nothing like this.  Tonight, I had Diet Coke for dinner (Feisty Cherry flavor) because I was too tired to cook food…or eat food for that matter.

It was also extraordinarily upsetting day because of something that happened to me at work.  But we will talk about that next week. #staytuned

All of this is to say, I don’t know how many posts will get written this week.  A few, for sure, but not as many as usual.  Monday was already a wash.  If I keep finishing work after 10:00PM, other days might be as well.

Please be patient while I fight through the last days of the session.  I have a handful of bills that I am passionately working on, and I may not be able to spare the time to write about fashion this week.

xx, Abra

As someone who used to work in a state legislature, I know what an insanely busy sleep-deprived adrenaline-fueled rollercoaster of a time the final week or two of Session can be. Sine Die will get here soon enough, and I hope the bills you’ve been working on make their way to the Governor’s desk!!

p.s. If you can, I would suggest taking off a day or two completely (seriously, even if its just the weekend to just sleep as much as you can and only do mindless tasks) before doing any kind of hotwash or more detailed analysis of how Session and your projects went.

This right here is why I keep coming back to the blog. You set and help us manage expectations which I think helps me do the same in my own life. I look forward to your posts, but definitely want you to take care of yourself!!

Abra, PLEASE don’t apologize! Life happens to all of us, and things regularly go kablooey (technical term), no matter how prepared we think we are ahead of time. If you need to take a break, even for the duration of the legislative session, we’re fine with that. Your health and sanity matter to us, and we don’t want you to push yourself beyond your limits just to entice us with strappy sandals and floaty summer dresses every day. You’ve got a lot going on in your life right now (serious understatement), so put your oxygen mask on first — we’re ALL in for a bumpy flight for the next couple of years, so let’s take virtual care of each other. . .

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said but just wanted to add that I’m so happy Abra DIDN’T actually say the words “I’m sorry.” None of us owe anyone an apology for choosing self care. I really struggle with this and just wanted to remind all of you amazing ladies that it’s okay for all of us to do what we need to do to take care of ourselves – guilt free.

Welcome to the life of a state legislative staffer! I am in my 7th session and every year its different (but the same). Take the time you need before getting back to the blog. At two weeks out you’re still in the marathon, not the sprint stage. The last 72 hours is always the worst. I am usually sleeping in my office those last couple nights – usually we are finishing conference committee at 2am and then presenting the bill on the floor at 6am.
