Belle’s 2017 Golden Globes Recap

After watching the Green Bay Packers save me from a week of boyfriend-sulking with a victory in the NFC Wild Card game, I clicked over to the Golden Globes just in time to see a tipsy Goldie Hawn trying to read a teleprompter sans glasses.  Ah, the Globes, the only award show where the nominations can be bought, but the cocktails are free.

I know I say this every year (cue broken record), but the dresses this year were a snoozefest.  It took me hours just to locate a few that I wanted to talk about.  And even then, I was like, “Can we just skip it?”  So if this post feels a little like the half-dead dinner conversation at Aunt Helen’s 80th birthday party, you’ll understand why.  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go take a nap.  So sleepy.  (As usual, all photos are borrowed from at JustJared, purveyor of celebrity gossip.)

Kristin Wiig in ???

Most Improved: Kristin Wiig, for finally choosing a dress that fit her, wasn’t the same color as her skin, and didn’t completely wash her out.

Yellow was a big trend at this year’s Globes, but it didn’t go over as well as some ladies were hoping…

On anyone else, this dress would look like a Dream Glow Barbie flashback, but on Emma, the star spangled frock totally works.

Kristen Bell in Jenny Packham

I didn’t know that Jenny Packham, Queen of the Pastel, Pleated Chiffon, even made black dresses.  But, boy, does she make black dresses.  Also, take note, this is how you complete an entire look.  The nude lip, smokey eye, black nails, modern-waves, and statement bracelet all just work.  I think after my nap, I’ll watch a few episodes of Veronica Mars.

It seems like Kerry Washington either looks drop dead amazing or ridiculous. She’s so beautiful, but so many of her dress choices just make me go “huh????”

I was really taken aback by your tone in this post. It was off-putting. I’ve read a few blogs cover the best and worst dressed, but your post is super holier-than-thou. You can criticize fashion without coming across that way. I’m sorry, I just had to say something because it was so alienating to me as a reader.

Agreed. The level of snark on this blog has escalated in the recent months.

      • Belle says:

If you speak to longtime readers, they will tell you that the snark on this blog has decreased markedly since the blog’s early days. The award show posts have always been snarky. Sometimes, I employ snark in my writing, particularly in a situation where a group of people have every resource at their disposal to look perfect for a self-congratulatory award show, and show up looking silly or underwhelming. If this is alienating to you, then this may not be the blog for you.

I am a long time reader, Belle. I understand the urge to go on the defense, but I’d also encourage you to think about and consider this feedback. It’s not that it’s snark, it’s the overall tone of the post. It’s good food for thought.

          • Belle says:

Em, you expressed that you don’t like the tone and that you find it alienating. I replied to your comment. That doesn’t mean that I’m on the defensive or I didn’t take your comment seriously. It would be wrong for me to pretend to agree when I don’t, or to say that the sometimes sarcastic or snarky tone of my writing will change when it won’t.

I am a sarcastic, sometimes snarky, person. That’s bound to show up in my writing. I’m not going to hide my personality away so that I never offend or upset a single reader. That’s not an achievable goal. I did not set out to offend or alienate readers with the tone, but this is a post about fashion at an award show attended by celebrities in gowns that cost more than my car, if there was ever a time for snark, this is it.

There will be posts you like and agree with, and posts you don’t. I don’t block comments or erase them simply because they don’t agree with me, which many bloggers do, but that doesn’t mean I’m bound to concur or apologize with every criticism, constructive or not. Sometimes, the critic is right, and I am wrong, and over the years, I’ve taken those moments to heart. But the award show posts will stay the way they’ve always been written, and it would be disingenuous of me to pretend otherwise or to just choose not to respond to your comment.

Since a comment that I just attempted to post on the latest Pick Six post is awaiting moderation, I’ll try to point out here that the statement about not blocking or erasing comments appears to be inaccurate. Unless a comment I made yesterday on that post magically disappeared overnight, it has been erased.

Yikes. I’m not saying you should change who you are. Sometimes people come off snottier than they mean to. This post seemed much more holier-than-though and frankly, snootier, than your typical writing. I just figured it was one of those cases where maybe it was inadvertent and mentioned it. I’m not asking you to change yourself or to agree with me. Everyone can and should try to take something away from constructive comments from longtime readers, especially ones who like and support you and your blog.

As I mentioned on the comment you left on the other post, I did not delete your comment. It is not in the pending folder. It is not in the spam folder. I did not see another comment from you yesterday, besides the one you originally left. And if I was in the business of deleting comments, why wouldn’t I just keep deleting the comments you keep leaving alleging I deleted one of your comments?

I wonder why these dresses. They have lots of glitz, but they are generally unglamorous. The exceptions are Kristen Bell, Viola in that YELLOW,! Yes, Naomi Harris is an absolute Siren in that body conscious stunner and if I had that body after three kids I would show it off too. While these gowns are designer/couture they fall short. I wonder if they were more stunning in person.

Yup Belle can be snarky and on the flip side has been a life/job saver for many. The gowns were lack luster other than the fabric content and sometimes maybe she is saying what some might be thinking. Notables such as Tim Gunn and Joan Rivers knew something about that. And if you think Belle was snarky, check out the tweets, TMZ and the other comments about “what not to wear to the Golden Globes”.

  12. Sarah says:

I’m late to this discussion, but I love the red carpet and discussion…fashion is SUBJECTIVE so everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. I agree that Kristen Bell looked great, and a few others did, too, but that it was a blah year. What did you think of Natalie Portman’s look, Belle/others? I’m pregnant now and I have to say I was hoping for a sexier pregnancy style. I get she was trying to channel Jackie O with that gown and hairdo, and she always looks gorgeous, but the dress was sort of meh.

    January 12, 2017/Reply
    • Belle says:

I wasn’t a fan of her dress, but I know it’s tough for pregnant women to find gowns, so I kind of let it slide. I think what bothered me the most about it was that it did seem like a Jackie O homage, and felt costume-like as a result. But had it not been for that, my only objection would have been the color, chartreuse is just hard to pull off.

Can I talk about how much I HATE the nude lip overload nonsense at awards shows for the last 5 years. Kristen Wiig’s washed out nude lip is a perfect example. The dead beige lip will always make my blood boil, I get that the makeup has to tone in with the outfit and not compete with eyes blah blah blah, but please can we stop! I can;t imagine Rita Hayworth or Marilyn Monroe in nude lips on the red carpet.
